“군에 들어갔더니 중학교 동기동창들이 몇 명 있었는데 학교 다닐 때 빌빌거리는 애들이 선임이라고 얼마나 우리 기수를 갈구고 때렸는지 정말 말도 못 하게 폭력을 행사했다. 나중에 제대하고 만났는데 도망다니더라. 나중에 밑의 기수 받았는데 거기에 중학교 동창놈이 하나 있었다. 나를 보고 군기가 바짝 들어 인사하는데. PX에서 먹을 것도 사다 주고 단둘이 있을 때 말 놓게하고 잘해줬더니 제대하고. 10년 넘게 동창들에게 내 얘기하고 다니고 나에게 잘해 주더라. 나중에 밑에 기수 집합시킬 때 내 동기놈들 중에는 위 기수에게 맞았다고 자기들도 똑같이 해준다고 하는 놈들이 있었는데. 나는 끝까지 밑에 기수에게 손대지 않았다. 내 나이 50 후반이 됐는데 지금 생각해도 잘했던 것 같아. 인생사 새옹지마인데 왜 그렇게 사는지 모르겠다.”
